Bandai's "PLANNOSAURUS Therizinosaurus": The Often Misunderstood Bipedal Herbivorous Dinosaur Appears, Recreating Details Based on Scientific Theories!

The dinosaur-themed model kit series 『PLANNOSAURUS』, released by the HOBBY Division of Japan's BANDAI SPIRITS Company, has announced its latest product from the Cretaceous period, the "Therizinosaurus," scheduled for release in March 2025.

Although the Therizinosaurus, as depicted in the movie "Jurassic World," left a deep impression as an executioner that killed creatures invading its territory, this portrayal is severely inconsistent with real-world scientific theories about the Therizinosaurus. The Therizinosaurus was a large theropod dinosaur that appeared in the Late Cretaceous period. Although excavated fossils are incomplete, it is generally believed to have been a feathered, bipedal herbivorous dinosaur, capable of using its massive claws, which could exceed 70 cm in length, to grasp food from trees.

The "PLANNOSAURUS Therizinosaurus" features a simple design that requires no tools like model nippers or glue. Users can easily detach the precisely sculpted bone and skin parts by hand, gradually assembling it into a fossil reconstruction of the skeleton, or a dinosaur form with the skin attached.

At the same time, the model reconstructs various features based on existing scientific theories, including feathers believed to have functions for courtship and intimidation, a beak-like mouth and molars used for cutting and chewing plants, massive sloth-like claws, and a thumb-touching foot different from other theropod dinosaurs.
