In the story, she was exposed by Armin as the true identity of the "Female Titan," and just as she was about to be captured, she used her Titan hardening ability to encase herself in a crystal, preventing the Survey Corps from obtaining information about her Titan abilities. She only reawakened from the crystal in the year 854 when Eren activated the Rumbling and all hardening was undone.
