Andrew Garfield's affection for the enigmatic "carousel horse meme" from the "We Live in Time" movie poster is undeniable. During recent promotional events for the film in New York, media outlets caught sight of him sporting a custom Levi's jacket, prominently featuring the now-iconic meme horse embroidered on its chest. The internet was quick to react, with fans exclaiming, "Oh my god! Andrew really loves that horse!"
As reported by "GQ", the jacket was a collaborative design between Garfield and his stylist, Warren Alfie Baker, with Levi's brought in to create the custom piece. Baker told the press that "this horse has become an indispensable family member of the 'We Live in Time' film, and it needed to have its own special moment."
To further promote the A24 romance film, which he co-stars in with Florence Pugh, Garfield also made an appearance on "The Late Show with Stephen Colbert". Naturally, Colbert brought up the internet-sweeping meme, to which Garfield explained that he initially spotted it while casually browsing his phone on his way to a retreat in Northern California.
"I thought at the time, 'Am I the only one who noticed this strange horse?'" Garfield recounted. "I even wondered if it felt like he was the main character of the poster, and we were stealing his thunder. But then I dismissed it, thinking, 'No, I'm probably just being too sensitive; nobody else will notice it.'"
Little did he know, the entire world was about to be swept up in a meme frenzy. Upon returning from his retreat, Garfield checked his phone only to discover Colbert discussing the horse on his program.
"I saw all the memes, and I was laughing so hard I was crying in the airport waiting room," Garfield said. "So I guess other people noticed it too, including you."
Following this, Garfield presented Colbert with a T-shirt featuring the horse's face and the phrase, "What's the rush?" Garfield clarified that the meaning behind the phrase would only become clear after viewing the film. He also quipped that he intends to produce a documentary to thoroughly investigate "why this horse garnered such attention? What operational oversight led to this phenomenon?"
