Audiences Reportedly Hospitalized as "Terrifier 3" Crushes "Joker: Folie à Deux" at Box Office, Challenges for Clown King Title

While "Joker: Folie à Deux" has struggled at the global box office, an unexpected challenger is emerging on the current theatrical charts, poised to claim the title of "clown king."

The bloody horror film "Terrifier 3" opened last week in North America and other territories, with reports quickly surfacing of audience members experiencing nausea, vomiting, and prematurely exiting screenings due to physical discomfort. However, these incidents have done little to deter horror fans. The film reportedly grossed $8.2 million in North America on Friday, including $2.4 million from Thursday previews, with a projected weekend total reaching $17 million.

"Joker: Folie à Deux" has delivered the worst box office performance in DC film history and has also garnered some of the lowest ratings for a superhero adaptation on various review sites. It has now been pushed out of the global top three, trailing DreamWorks Animation's "The Wild Robot," which earned approximately $13.5 million in its third weekend, and Warner Bros.' "Beetlejuice Beetlejuice," which pulled in $7.3 million in its sixth weekend.

"Terrifier 3" is distributed by Cineverse, a company led by Chris McGurk. This gory trilogy has sparked controversy due to its extreme violence. The series launched its first film in 2018, followed by the surprising success of "Terrifier 2" in 2022, which immediately led to the announcement of a third installment. Now, as the film rolls out across Europe and North America, it's not only racking up "stunning" box office numbers but also causing a string of medical incidents. Many theaters are reportedly providing vomit bags, and some even have medical personnel on standby outside to prevent further "unhappy accidents" caused by "Terrifier 3."
