Will 'Grand Theft Auto 6' Actually Release in 2025? A Look at Rockstar's 20-Year History of Delays

It's been nearly a year since Rockstar Games released the debut trailer for "Grand Theft Auto VI," and there has been no further official information since. Recent comments from former Rockstar director Obbe Vermeij suggesting a potential delay have left fans worried that they won't be able to play the game as scheduled in 2025.

Although Strauss Zelnick, CEO of Rockstar Games' parent company Take-Two Interactive, has publicly stated he is "highly confident" that "Grand Theft Auto VI" will be released on time, gaming outlet PC Gamer has drawn a different conclusion after analyzing Rockstar's 20-year release history.

The outlet notes that this pattern can be traced back to the launch of "Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas." Originally scheduled to hit shelves in the US on October 19, 2004, it was later pushed to October 26. The European release was similarly delayed from its original date of October 22 to October 29.

Since then, nearly every major release from Rockstar Games has experienced a delay, and the length of these delays has gradually increased. For example, "Bully," originally slated for an October 2005 release, was ultimately pushed back to October 2006. "Grand Theft Auto IV," which was supposed to launch on October 16, 2007, was delayed all the way to April 29, 2008, due to development issues.

Given this history, the claim from former Rockstar director Obbe Vermeij that the game "might be delayed until 2027" doesn't seem unfounded. PC Gamer even stated that they can't fully trust Take-Two's expressed "confidence" in the current release window.
