Trouble is brewing once again in a galaxy far, far away. The upcoming "Star Wars" film, set to feature Daisy Ridley's return as Rey Skywalker, has reportedly hit another roadblock. Originally, Steven Knight, creator of "Peaky Blinders," was slated to pen the script, with Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, who directed episodes of "Ms. Marvel," attached to direct. However, recent reports indicate a significant change in the production team.
Variety has confirmed that Steven Knight has exited the project, marking yet another screenwriter departure for the highly anticipated film. Knight had taken over the writing duties last March from "Watchmen" producer Damon Lindelof and "The Strain" story editor Justin Britt-Gibson. The project was kept under wraps until its official announcement at the "Star Wars Celebration" event the following month, where Daisy Ridley's return was revealed. Now, just over a year later, Knight has also stepped down.
The film is reportedly centered on Rey's journey to establish a new Jedi Academy. Due to this latest change, production is now not expected to begin until sometime after 2025. Reports indicate that Obaid-Chinoy remains attached as the director for the film.
Lucasfilm continues to actively expand the "Star Wars" cinematic universe. Jon Favreau's "The Mandalorian & Grogu" movie is scheduled for a May 2026 release. Disney has also slated two additional untitled "Star Wars" films for December 2026 and December 2027, respectively.
During the 2023 "Star Wars Celebration" in London, Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy announced that in addition to Obaid-Chinoy's film, "Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny" director James Mangold and "Ahsoka" producer Dave Filoni each have their own "Star Wars" films in development.
