DC's "The Penguin," a spin-off series from "The Batman" film, premiered on September 19, 2024, and has since aired up to its sixth episode, garnering widespread acclaim. The series boasts impressive scores, achieving 8.8/10 on IMDb and 94/100 on Rotten Tomatoes.
As the narrative delves deeper into Gotham City's infamous Arkham Asylum, introducing the lesser-known but pivotal character Magpie, fans have naturally wondered why notorious villains like Joker or Harley Quinn have yet to appear in the series.
Addressing these questions, "The Penguin" showrunner Lauren LeFranc recently spoke with The Direct, offering her insights:
LeFranc explained that for that particular episode, the team's primary focus was on telling Sofia Falcone's story. She added that the challenge was to convey the atmosphere of Arkham Asylum and Sofia's experiences within a single hour, and the best approach was to explore it through Sofia's perspective. 
She further stated that they did not want to cram all of Gotham's villains into the plot at once, nor did they wish to divert audience attention from the main characters, preventing viewers from simply exclaiming, "Oh, it's so-and-so!" While acknowledging that Joker and Harley Quinn are excellent characters, LeFranc emphasized that they did not want them to appear casually, stressing that the series' focus was on Sofia's narrative, allowing the audience to fully immerse themselves in her viewpoint.
Although the Clown Prince of Crime may not make an appearance in the eight-episode spin-off series "The Penguin," Barry Keoghan's portrayal of the Joker has already been teased in "The Batman" film. This suggests that the character is highly likely to have a more significant role in the next sequel film.
