Hideo Kojima Reviews "Venom: The Last Dance" and "Joker: Folie à Deux": Game Creator Predicts Evolving Reception Over Next Decade

The recent releases of DC's "Joker" sequel, "Joker: Folie à Deux," and Sony/Marvel's "Venom: The Last Dance" have certainly sparked considerable discussion, despite neither film achieving widespread critical acclaim or blockbuster box office success. This includes varied reactions to "Venom: The Last Dance" and polarized opinions on "Joker: Folie à Deux."

Renowned video game creator Hideo Kojima, a self-proclaimed cinephile, recently made time to see both films. He offered a positive review for Todd Phillips' "Joker: Folie à Deux," a perspective that notably differs from those of acclaimed Hollywood directors Quentin Tarantino and Francis Ford Coppola.

Kojima stated that after watching "Joker: Folie à Deux," the opening animated prologue reminded him of the nostalgic "Looney Tunes" cartoons, which he felt depicted Joker and his shadow. He added that the subsequent trial scenes explored the issue of Joker's multiple personalities, prompting discussions from various angles: whether Joker is Arthur, or merely another shadow persona, and who Arthur truly is.

He further explained that these arguments ultimately transformed into a meta-perspective, questioning whether it was Joker or Arthur who captivated audiences in the previous film. This question, he noted, was repeatedly posed to the public and the citizens of Gotham.

After discussing the narrative design of "Joker: Folie à Deux," Kojima delved into the film's underlying impact and moral implications. He observed that we live in an era of poetic justice and clear-cut heroes, with an increasing number of villain-centric spin-off films in recent years prompting audiences to consider if villains can also be superheroes.

He suggested that such themes might still be too avant-garde, posing a significant challenge for DC films. He pondered whether global audiences truly prefer Joker or Arthur, speculating that this could be one reason for the film's polarized reception.

Kojima predicted that over the next ten or even twenty years, as superhero films become more prevalent, the film's reception might change. He believed it might take some time for it to truly embody "Folie à Deux," but he affirmed that audiences were undoubtedly captivated by the performances of Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga.

As for "Venom: The Last Dance," Kojima shared his thoughts online:
