Following the massive global box office success of "The Super Mario Bros. Movie," Nintendo's next video game adaptation is the live-action "The Legend of Zelda" film, announced last year in partnership with Sony Pictures. While details beyond the director remain under wraps, the film's potential release window appears to have been hinted at.
During an official presentation, a slide titled "Visual Content" reportedly outlined the projected release timelines for both the live-action "The Legend of Zelda" film and the animated sequel to "The Super Mario Bros. Movie." The Mario sequel is slated for 2026, while "Zelda" is listed for "202X," indicating a release sometime before the end of the decade.
During the same meeting, Nintendo President Shuntaro Furukawa stated that "The Super Mario Bros. Movie," co-produced with Illumination, has been seen by approximately 170 million people since its April 2023 release. He emphasized that this widespread viewership has significantly boosted the recognition of the "Mario" video game star, regardless of whether audiences had prior gaming experience.
To capitalize on this momentum, Furukawa confirmed that the upcoming sequel is projected to hit theaters around April 2026. As for the live-action "The Legend of Zelda" film, he noted that it is currently in its early development stages.
The live-action "The Legend of Zelda" film is confirmed to be directed by Wes Ball, known for "The Maze Runner" trilogy. Nintendo game designer Shigeru Miyamoto is also involved as a producer. Other details, including writers and cast members, have not yet been announced.
