While story details for James Gunn's first DCU film, "Superman," remain tightly under wraps, the secrecy has only fueled fan anticipation and curiosity about how this new DC movie will differ from Zack Snyder's previous versions. In a recent interview, Gunn finally offered some answers.
Speaking with the press, James Gunn not only shared his grand vision for the DCU but also explained that the universe's films and television series will not adhere to a single, unified tone. Instead, he emphasized drawing inspiration from the rich history of the comics to present a diverse range of story formats.
"One of the things I appreciate about DC Comics is how they've always told stories from different angles," Gunn said. "They have storylines that are suitable for the whole family, darker stories geared more towards adults, and they've even released lighthearted and humorous works."
As ComicBook.com notes, this suggests that the upcoming "Superman," set for a 2025 release, and other DCU projects will mark a complete departure from the tone of the former DCEU and will be starkly different from the dark, gritty style established by Zack Snyder.
However, considering Gunn's previous work—including "The Suicide Squad," "Peacemaker," and the upcoming animated series "Creature Commandos," all of which are R-rated projects filled with comedic violence—some have expressed skepticism about his ability to helm an all-ages "Superman" film.

Furthermore, James Gunn stressed that he is currently rethinking his creative approach to DCU films to ensure every project showcases a more diverse style. "I think what makes movies truly interesting is telling stories in different ways," he stated. "Honestly, I've gotten a bit tired of every movie looking the same. I'm trying to break out of that framework, and DC is moving in that direction as well."
