DCU vs. MCU: James Gunn Explains the Biggest Difference — "We Won't Be Like Marvel..."

Since James Gunn took over as co-CEO of DC Studios, the director, who previously helmed Marvel's "Guardians of the Galaxy" trilogy, has been a major focus for fans worldwide eager to see how he will expand the new DCU. Beyond anticipation for his unique approach to building a DC Universe distinct from its predecessors, there's significant curiosity about how it will differ from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, which is already in its fifth phase.

In a recent interview with Collider, James Gunn stated that his plans for the DCU would not emulate the MCU's model, where audiences are required to watch multiple films or series to grasp the overarching narrative.

Gunn explained that he doesn't envision the DCU as a superhero universe where viewers must watch a specific film, then a specific series, to understand the story. He added that he doesn't want audiences to feel obligated to do "homework" by watching every single film just to keep up with the plot. Instead, he aims for the DCU to be a shared universe where stories exist within a common world.

In fact, James Gunn had previously stated on Threads that future DCU projects would not follow Marvel's approach of scheduling release dates before scripts are finalized. Instead, projects would only be confirmed for development once their scripts are complete.
