The HBO series reboot of "Harry Potter," currently in active development, is deep into the casting process, with candidates for several key roles reportedly emerging. The latest revelation concerns the actor for the new Severus Snape. According to an exclusive report published today by The Hollywood Reporter (THR), 34-year-old British actor Paapa Essiedu (pictured left), known for his roles in "Genie" and the series "Gangs of London," is Warner Bros. Pictures' current top choice.

THR's sources indicate that Essiedu has been invited to take on the role, though it's unclear if formal contract negotiations with Warner Bros. have begun. Recently, Mark Rylance (pictured above), an Academy Award winner for Best Supporting Actor for "Bridge of Spies," was also rumored to be in talks for the fourth cinematic iteration of Albus Dumbledore. However, like Essiedu, he has not yet officially signed on. The sources also added that recent rumors suggesting Cillian Murphy might be cast as the new Voldemort are unfounded.
The "Harry Potter" series will be helmed by Francesca Gardiner, co-writer of "His Dark Materials," who serves as showrunner. It is slated for a 2026 premiere.
