George R.R. Martin Admits "A Song of Ice and Fire" Novel Series, Delayed Over a Decade, May Never Be Finished: "People Are Already Writing My Obituary"

HBO had previously planned a spin-off series for "Game of Thrones," based on the "A Song of Ice and Fire" novels, a project that was ultimately shelved. This inspired original author George R.R. Martin to consider adapting the untold story into a novel. However, with his novel "The Winds of Winter" now delayed for 13 years and still unfinished, this new concept is unlikely to materialize anytime soon.

But when will "The Winds of Winter," a book delayed for over a decade, finally see the light of day? It seems even George R.R. Martin, its creator, cannot provide a definitive answer. In a recent interview with "The Hollywood Reporter," he candidly addressed the unfortunate possibility that the novel might never be completed.

"It's been 13 years I've been late, alas," Martin stated. "Every time I talk about it, I think, 'How did I get 13 years behind?' I don't know what happened, time just flies by day by day."

He continued, "Of course, finishing 'The Winds of Winter' is still my main goal, although there are a lot of people out there who have already written my obituary, saying, 'Oh, he'll never finish it.' I don't know, maybe they're not wrong, but I'm still alive and I feel pretty good."

Around November 2023, George R.R. Martin revealed that "The Winds of Winter" had reached approximately 1,100 pages. However, this figure was reportedly the same as the progress he mentioned in 2022, inevitably disappointing many fans. What's more, "The Winds of Winter" isn't even the final installment in the "A Song of Ice and Fire" series. With Martin turning 76 this year, some readers' belief that he "will never finish it in his lifetime" might not be entirely unfounded.
