Following "Ready Player One," Academy Award-winning director Steven Spielberg has set his sights on another sci-fi novel for a big-screen adaptation.
Renowned entertainment journalist Daniel Richtman recently exclusively revealed on his Patreon page that Spielberg plans to direct a film adaptation of "Old Man's War." The project is based on John Scalzi's debut novel of the same name, published in 2005, which later expanded into a six-book series.

This isn't Hollywood's first attempt to adapt "Old Man's War." Paramount Pictures acquired the adaptation rights in 2011, initially tapping "Air Force One" director Wolfgang Petersen to helm the project. The adaptation later shifted to the SyFy channel, changing course to a TV series, with Petersen remaining involved in development. SyFy's series plans ultimately stalled, and Netflix took over in 2017, steering the production back towards a feature film. Richtman did not specify whether Spielberg's current version is still under the Netflix banner.

Spielberg's film adaptation of "Old Man's War" will center on 75-year-old John Perry. After losing his wife and friends, Perry chooses to enlist, agreeing to have his consciousness transferred into a genetically enhanced, younger body by humanity's Colonial Defense Force, effectively getting a second lease on life on the battlefield. What John doesn't remember is that his late wife, Kathy, also signed a similar agreement. He is surprised to find a younger Kathy serving in the military, only to discover that the person before him isn't Kathy, but someone else whose consciousness has been implanted. A heartbroken John fights in battle while simultaneously trying to reclaim his lost love.

Richtman anticipates that Spielberg will recruit a roster of veteran actors to portray the "de-aged" Colonial Defense Force soldiers, utilizing advanced visual effects to make them appear younger. Actors who have previously collaborated with Spielberg, such as Liam Neeson and Harrison Ford, both known for their strong action star personas, as well as Tom Hanks, who led Spielberg's war classic "Saving Private Ryan," are all potential candidates to play the protagonist, John Perry.
