Following Robert Downey Jr.'s surprising return announcement, another original Avenger is reportedly joining the fray. Entertainment outlet The Wrap exclusively reported earlier that former "Captain America" Chris Evans is set to return for "Avengers 5: Doomsday." The specific role he will play, however, remains unconfirmed.
Just this past July, Evans made a cameo appearance in "Deadpool & Wolverine," where he famously reprised his role as Human Torch from the original "Fantastic Four" film series. Considering Downey's return in "Doomsday" isn't as Iron Man but rather as the formidable villain Doctor Doom, it's highly probable that Evans will not be portraying Steve Rogers in his upcoming appearance.

"Avengers: Doomsday" is currently slated for a North American release on May 1, 2026. The film will see the return of directors Anthony and Joe Russo, who previously helmed "Captain America: The Winter Soldier," "Captain America: Civil War," "Avengers: Infinity War," and "Avengers: Endgame." Stephen McFeely, who penned four Marvel films for the directing duo, is also set to return as screenwriter.
Separately, Deadline has confirmed that Anthony Mackie, who currently wields the shield as Captain America, is also set to appear in "Avengers: Doomsday." His involvement, however, comes as little surprise, given his status as a core member of the current Avengers roster.
