The plot is set in a fictional 1990s where humanity has won a rebellion against artificial intelligence but remains deeply reliant on machines. Meanwhile, the defeated and exiled robots are equally lost, struggling to prove their free will to humans. The story follows Michelle, who is searching for her younger brother, whom she believed to be long dead. She teams up with Kris, a veteran now working as a long-haul truck driver, and his smuggling partner, the construction robot Herman (voiced by Mackie). Kris and Herman are Michelle's only hope to navigate treacherous enemy territory, find her missing brother, and uncover the truth behind his initial abduction.
