Universal Pictures today made a surprise announcement: its long-running fantasy horror IP, "The Mummy" franchise, is officially set for another reboot. The studio has tapped "Evil Dead Rise" director Lee Cronin (pictured below) to write and direct the new installment, which is slated for a North American release on April 17, 2026.
This marks the third reboot for "The Mummy" franchise, following the original 1932 film, the Brendan Fraser-led adventure series, and Tom Cruise's 2017 thriller-fantasy iteration, which was cut short after a single film.
Unlike the large-scale spectacle and blockbuster style of the Fraser and Cruise versions, Cronin's take appears to be leaning towards a smaller scope, aligning with the traditional horror roots of the 1932 original. This direction is further emphasized by Universal's co-production with Blumhouse Productions, known for its low-budget horror films. Blumhouse has previously reimagined other "Universal Monsters" alongside "The Mummy," all produced on a modest scale.
Blumhouse's "The Invisible Man" (2020) was a critical and commercial success, costing only $7 million to produce but grossing over $140 million worldwide. The studio also released "Wolf Man" in January 2025. Both films were written and directed by Leigh Whannell, co-creator of the "Saw" franchise.
In a statement, Cronin remarked that this new installment "will be unlike any 'The Mummy' movie you've seen before." He added, "I'm currently digging deep, trying to unearth some very ancient and terrifying stuff," using the metaphor of excavating mummies to convey his commitment to crafting a truly frightening new narrative.
