The crucial Christmas holiday box office battle saw Paramount Pictures and Walt Disney Pictures go head-to-head last weekend with two major sequels/prequels: "Sonic the Hedgehog 3" and "Mufasa: The Lion King." As widely anticipated, "Sonic the Hedgehog 3" emerged victorious, claiming the top spot with significantly higher popularity and stronger audience reception than "Mufasa."

"Sonic the Hedgehog 3" roared into theaters, debuting at number one with $62 million. "Mufasa: The Lion King" landed in second place, trailing its competitor by nearly half with a $35 million opening. Both films underperformed their predecessors; "Sonic the Hedgehog 2" earned $72.1 million in its North American debut, while the 2019 "The Lion King" opened to a massive $191 million. However, "Sonic the Hedgehog 3" saw a relatively modest drop of $10 million, whereas "Mufasa" plummeted by over $150 million compared to its predecessor.

Furthermore, "Sonic the Hedgehog 3" boasts a production budget of just $122 million, while "Mufasa" carried a hefty $200 million price tag, setting a significantly higher break-even point. Given that the 2019 "The Lion King" grossed over $1.6 billion globally, the studio likely held much higher expectations for "Mufasa." Now, however, it appears "Mufasa" may struggle to even recoup its production costs theatrically.
