Big the Cat Almost Made It to the Big Screen: "Sonic the Hedgehog" Screenwriters Reveal Cut "Sonic 2" Scene

The third live-action "Sonic the Hedgehog" film, adapted from SEGA's classic video game, is set to hit North American theaters on December 20, 2024. The movie has already surpassed "Mufasa: The Lion King" at the box office, achieving excellent results.

While we can't yet reveal the new characters that foreign media outlets are buzzing about, "Sonic the Hedgehog" series screenwriters Patrick Casey and Josh Miller recently disclosed in an interview that Big the Cat, the beloved purple feline who first appeared in the video games, almost made his debut in the previous film, "Sonic the Hedgehog 2."

"For 'Sonic the Hedgehog 2,' there was a draft of a scene where Sonic was crossing snowy mountains and going into a cave," Casey explained. "It had an 'Indiana Jones' vibe, where a skeleton would suddenly pop out and scare you. We originally wanted to include a similar scene, essentially replacing it with... I initially thought of a Big the Cat skeleton, but..."

"But it didn't necessarily have to be the purple cat," Josh Miller added. According to the screenwriters, Big the Cat's storyline was deemed too dark, which ultimately led to the decision to remove the character's appearance from the film.

"Ultimately, we cut that plot point because it didn't make much sense," Casey stated.

Big the Cat first appeared in "Sonic Adventure," released in 1998. He is an anthropomorphic purple cat who resides deep within mysterious ruins. Despite his large size, Big is known for his gentle and kind-hearted nature, and he is also a skilled fisherman. He is always ready to help Sonic and his friends whenever they need assistance.
