According to an exclusive report from film critic and reporter Jeff Sneider in his newsletter 'The InSneider,' "The Lighthouse" director Robert Eggers has signed on with Sony Pictures to write and direct a new sequel to the classic fantasy film "Labyrinth," originally helmed by the late puppetry master Jim Henson.
Additionally, Chris Columbus, director of the first two "Harry Potter" films, and his daughter Eleanor Columbus, who recently served as producers on Eggers' new film "Nosferatu," are set to produce the "Labyrinth" sequel. Jim Henson's children, Lisa Henson and Brian Henson, will also be involved in the production.

Sony has been attempting to develop a "Labyrinth" sequel for years. Prior to Eggers' involvement, both Scott Derrickson ("Doctor Strange") and Fede Álvarez ("Alien: Romulus") were attached to direct at various stages. "Guardians of the Galaxy" co-writer Nicole Perlman also spent time developing a script. Lisa Henson has been on board as a producer since 2017, and original star Jennifer Connelly confirmed three years ago that she had been in talks to participate in a sequel, though those plans ultimately stalled.
Both Álvarez and Derrickson eventually departed the project. Derrickson publicly acknowledged the significant challenge of making a commercially successful "Labyrinth" film for a modern audience.

Sneider reports that Eggers is planning a sequel, not a remake. However, it remains unclear whether this will be a direct sequel or a soft reboot (also known as a legacy sequel) with a new lead. Sneider currently has no confirmed details on the approach.
In a recent interview with IndieWire, Eggers mentioned he has five projects currently in development: a Western, a medieval epic with a completed script titled "The Knight," and a miniseries centered on Grigori Rasputin. Sneider speculates that "Labyrinth 2" is one of the remaining two projects, though Eggers himself admitted he is unsure which film will go into production next.
