The "Dune" franchise saw significant expansion last year, not only with the release of its sequel, "Dune: Part Two," but also with the premiere of the spinoff series "Dune: Prophecy" on the small screen. Both storylines are confirmed to continue, with the third film, "Dune Messiah," expected to begin production next year, and "Prophecy" already renewed for a second season. However, Legendary Pictures and Warner Bros. Pictures' plans for the "Dune" universe appear to extend even further.

Renowned entertainment journalist Daniel Richtman recently reported on his Patreon page that Legendary and Warner Bros. have already begun planning "Dune 4" and additional spin-off series. While the protagonists of these potential new series remain entirely unknown, "Dune 4," if it moves forward as expected, would continue adapting Frank Herbert's third novel, "Children of Dune." This book was previously adapted into the 2003 miniseries "Frank Herbert's Children of Dune."

However, Denis Villeneuve, who is set to direct the third film, reportedly isn't keen on the "Dune" franchise expanding too broadly. The outlet World of Reel recently claimed that a source close to Villeneuve informed them last fall that the director was actually quite averse to these potential plans for expanding the "Dune" universe, regardless of his involvement.
