While "Mufasa: The Lion King," released late last year, has seen its box office performance and overall buzz fall far short of the 2019 original, its North American gross is nearing $200 million. Combined with international receipts, the film has slowly amassed $530 million worldwide. While surpassing the previous film's $1.6 billion seems unlikely, for Walt Disney Pictures, these numbers appear strong enough to warrant further development.

Renowned entertainment scooper Daniel Richtman revealed today on his Patreon page that Disney has begun development on a third "The Lion King" 'live-action' film. However, the third installment will not focus on Mufasa, with Richtman emphasizing it won't be a direct sequel to "Mufasa: The Lion King." Instead, Disney is reportedly looking to revisit Simba's personal journey or spotlight other existing characters. Currently, there's no word on a director, writers, or returning voice cast, suggesting the project is still in its very early conceptual stages. More details are expected to emerge.
