Following a previous delay, Ubisoft has finally released the highly anticipated story trailer for "Assassin's Creed Shadows," the fourteenth installment in the long-running franchise. Alongside the new footage, the publisher also unveiled a stunning collection of concept art, offering a deeper look into the development team's vision of Japan's Sengoku period.

"Assassin's Creed Shadows" features a dual-protagonist system, starring Yasuke, a samurai based on the historical African figure, and Naoe, a veteran shinobi assassin from Iga Province. Players can freely switch between the two characters to experience their distinct combat styles.
The trailer showcases historical figures such as Oda Nobunaga and Kuroda Yoshitaka, set against authentic backdrops of the era. Players will be able to take control of Naoe to survey the breathtaking landscapes, engaging in the stealth gameplay that defines the "Assassin's Creed" series. Additionally, the newly released concept art beautifully depicts the world of Sengoku Japan across different seasons.

In a move to build player confidence and excitement, Ubisoft coordinated the trailer's release with a wave of hands-on gameplay previews from various media outlets. These videos highlight the gameplay differences between Yasuke and Naoe and offer an early comparison to previous entries in the series.
Media Gameplay Previews
In its preview, Eurogamer.net mentioned that the overall map design in "Assassin's Creed Shadows" feels simpler and more intuitive, similar to Ravensthorpe in "Assassin's Creed Valhalla." The outlet also pointed to a new "Immersive Mode," which automatically switches the game's audio to Japanese mixed with period-appropriate Portuguese. This feature was seen as an attempt to emulate the historical atmosphere of the hit 2024 series "Shōgun," allowing players to become more deeply absorbed in the setting.
As previously announced, players can freely switch between Yasuke and Naoe while progressing through the story. During main missions, players can even decide which character takes the lead, encouraging strategic thinking about who is best suited for specific combat or exploration scenarios.

However, due to their different backgrounds and roles, Yasuke and Naoe offer markedly different playstyles. Naoe, for instance, has a smaller arsenal of weapons compared to Yasuke. Her gameplay is also described as being more challenging, requiring a greater degree of skill.

Overall, "Assassin's Creed Shadows" not only preserves the core stealth elements of the series but also enhances gameplay depth by offering more missions to explore the Sengoku period. The strategic choices involving characters and tools also promise to deliver a greater sense of freedom for the player.
