Last month, reports from The Wrap sent shockwaves through the global fanbase, claiming that former Captain America Chris Evans would return for the rumored "Avengers 5: Doomsday." However, according to a recent interview with Evans himself in Esquire magazine, that news appears to be unfounded.
Esquire published a feature today profiling the new Captain America, Anthony Mackie. As the interview took place on the very day the rumor of Evans' return for "Doomsday" broke, the Esquire editor reached out to Evans for confirmation. Evans reportedly denied the claims, stating that such rumors frequently surface every few years since "Avengers: Endgame" premiered, but there was no truth to them, and he was "happily retired."

The Esquire editor, however, remained skeptical of Evans' denial, especially after asking Mackie for his thoughts on the return rumor. Mackie reportedly responded with a laugh, saying he had spoken with Chris just weeks prior, and at that time, Marvel had no plans for his return. Mackie then mimicked Evans' tone, adding that Evans had said, "You know, I'm happily retired." The editor noted that both Mackie and Evans used the phrase "happily retired," leading to suspicion that they might be concealing something.
Mackie then seriously stated that while he hadn't seen the script, he trusted the returning directors, the Russo Brothers, to handle the project. He emphasized that audiences wouldn't want to see "Infinity War" and "Endgame" 2.0, praising the Russo Brothers as incredibly smart and deeply knowledgeable about the Marvel Cinematic Universe, its history, and the comic books. Mackie concluded that he knew they had their own ideas, and they "better have their own ideas," otherwise he didn't know how they would bring so many characters together and make it work effectively.
