Rocksteady Reportedly Developing New Single-Player "Batman" Game; Monolith's "Wonder Woman" Faces Development Hurdles

Recent reports from Bloomberg journalist Jason Schreier have highlighted internal turmoil at Warner Bros. Games, detailing a series of challenges including significant project failures, leadership changes, and stalled development on several titles. Amidst these headwinds, however, comes exciting news for fans: Rocksteady Studios is reportedly developing a new single-player "Batman" game.

The Future of DC Gaming

Sources indicate that Rocksteady Studios' new single-player "Batman" game is still in its early stages, suggesting a release is likely several years away. Details remain scarce, and it is currently unknown whether this project will continue the acclaimed "Arkham" series or explore a new narrative direction.

Meanwhile, the "Wonder Woman" game, first announced in 2021 and developed by Monolith Productions, is reportedly facing significant development issues. The project was reportedly rebooted early last year, saw a change in game directors, and has already incurred costs exceeding $100 million, yet it is still far from completion.

Notably, the highly praised "Nemesis System" from Monolith's "Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor" and its sequel, which would have allowed players to forge alliances with enemies, was initially planned for "Wonder Woman" but has since been scrapped in favor of a more traditional action-adventure gameplay style. The future of the "Wonder Woman" project remains uncertain.

Warner Bros. Doubles Down on Core IPs

Looking back at 2024, Rocksteady's "Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League" proved to be a major commercial disappointment, reportedly costing Warner Bros. $200 million due to poor player reception and market performance. Additionally, the fighting game "MultiVersus" underperformed Warner's expectations, and "Harry Potter: Quidditch Champions" failed to generate significant market buzz.

In response to these setbacks, Warner Bros. has decided to refocus its gaming strategy on four key intellectual properties: "Hogwarts Legacy," "Mortal Kombat," "Game of Thrones," and DC Comics—with a particular emphasis on "Batman."

The success of "Hogwarts Legacy" has led to a sequel already being in development, and NetherRealm's "Mortal Kombat 1" has sold over 5 million copies, with more DLC planned for release.

Furthermore, WB Games Montreal is reportedly developing a "Game of Thrones" related title. While the studio had previously pitched games based on "John Constantine" and "The Flash," the former was not approved, and the latter was canceled following the poor box office performance of the "Flash" movie.

Bloomberg's report also indicates that Warner Bros. Games' primary plans for the next two years include an enhanced version of "Hogwarts Legacy," a new Lego game, and several mobile titles. There is currently no further information regarding NetherRealm's next project.
