The official synopsis describes Rogen as Matt, a newly appointed Hollywood studio head whose dream job quickly becomes a struggle. Despite being on the brink of success, he starts to question if he's become the very force destroying cinema. Matt and his feuding team battle their insecurities while navigating narcissistic artists and greedy corporate giants. They face constant obstacles in their attempt to make great films, finding themselves stuck at every turn. As filmmaking becomes completely ingrained in his life and his lifelong pursuit, this passion may ultimately be his downfall.

A unique feature of "The Studio" is its commitment to single, unedited long takes for every scene, a technique Rogen and Goldberg deliberately wanted to challenge themselves with. Rogen told Esquire magazine that he and Evan were fascinated by the idea of "what if we made a movie in the exact opposite way of everything we’ve ever learned? Instead of shooting everything and then finding it in the edit, what if we really studied the script, really designed the scenes, and were completely present in a moment as we were shooting it?"
Rogen continued, stating, "We wanted it to have this immersive, insane energy, because that’s what our experience is, in those places, people are yelling at each other, and we wanted you to be in it, and create that unpredictable, uneasy energy."
