As the Will Smith-led romantic comedy "Hitch" celebrates its 20th anniversary this week, Business Insider marked the occasion with an interview with director Andy Tennant, who looked back on the film's production. During the conversation, Tennant unexpectedly revealed that Smith has already been quietly working on a sequel.
Tennant stated that he believes Will Smith is developing a "Hitch" sequel, but confirmed he is not involved. He mentioned finding out about the project three months ago. The director explained that he had a great idea for a sequel and was discussing it with a Sony Pictures executive, only to be told that Smith's production company was already developing one. "What are you gonna do? It's Hollywood," he remarked.

The original "Hitch" was made on a budget of nearly $70 million, a considerable sum for a romantic comedy. However, it became a massive success, grossing over $370 million worldwide—a figure that also far exceeds the typical box office standard for the genre. From a commercial standpoint, a sequel is understandable, though the 20-year gap before starting development is somewhat puzzling.
Tennant also touched on the numerous creative disagreements he had with Smith, noting their visions for the film were vastly different. However, he admitted that the final product they created together was better than what either of them would have made individually. Tennant recalled being shocked when Smith wanted to halt production just three days before filming was set to begin to continue polishing the script. Despite this, Tennant emphasized that he holds no ill will toward Smith and understands it wasn't an easy decision for the star to hire him. The two were simply colleagues for a short time and have not been in contact since the film wrapped.
