Last November, reports circulated that Daniel Craig was set to star in a DC Comics adaptation centered on the World War II superhero, "Sgt. Rock." The film was slated to be directed by Luca Guadagnino, who recently collaborated with Craig on "Queer" and is known for "Call Me by Your Name." However, just a few months later, Craig has reportedly decided to step down from the role.

The Hollywood Reporter broke the news today of Craig's departure, citing sources who indicated scheduling conflicts with his wife, Rachel Weisz, as a potential reason. (Some acting couples coordinate their schedules to ensure one parent is available for childcare.) Another source claimed Craig was deeply disheartened by the poor box office performance and lack of awards season recognition for "Queer," including its complete absence from Oscar nominations, which allegedly led to his diminished interest in portraying Sgt. Rock.

Despite the setback, DC Studios still plans to commence production in the UK this summer and has already begun searching for a replacement. Among the actors on their shortlist is Jeremy Allen White, the popular star of "The Bear." However, White has previously expressed a lack of interest in superhero projects, leaving many curious if DC can persuade him to take on the role.

Guadagnino remains attached to direct "Sgt. Rock," with Justin Kuritzkes penning the script. This marks their third collaboration, following Guadagnino's two directorial features from last year, "Challengers" and "Queer," both also written by Kuritzkes.
