Christopher Nolan's epic Greek saga, "The Odyssey," has officially begun filming, with the first still confirming Matt Damon in the lead role of Odysseus. While other cast roles remain under wraps, the identity of a major character that almost saw a different actor join the project has now been revealed.

According to acclaimed film journalist Daniel Richtman, who shared details on his Patreon page, Robert Downey Jr., fresh off his Oscar-winning collaboration with Nolan on "Oppenheimer," was initially approached to portray the sea god Poseidon. However, Downey Jr. ultimately had to decline the role due to his busy schedule filming the upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe blockbuster, "Avengers: Doomsday," where he is set to debut as Doctor Doom.
Richtman further reported that Nolan is committed to a highly faithful adaptation of Homer's original epic poem, emphasizing extensive use of practical effects, real sets, and physical special makeup. The journalist also reiterated previous claims that Nolan is already conceptualizing his next project after "The Odyssey," with plans to re-team with Downey Jr. for another large-scale epic.
