The upcoming "Clayface" solo film, centered on the eponymous villain from the "Batman" comics, has finally found its director after a selection process by DC Studios. The Hollywood Reporter (THR) exclusively revealed today that DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn met with British horror director James Watkins (pictured right) for a final pitch this past Thursday, with Watkins successfully landing the job.

The "Clayface" screenplay was penned by "Doctor Sleep" director Mike Flanagan. With a production budget of approximately $40 million, filming is expected to begin this year. The film is described as a Hollywood-set horror story, following a B-movie actor who, in pursuit of maintaining his looks, injects himself with a mysterious substance. This inadvertently grants him the ability to reshape his appearance and body, transforming him into a monstrous clay creature.
Watkins is a director specializing in the thriller and horror genres, first gaining recognition with his debut feature, "Eden Lake." He also directed an episode of "Black Mirror," and his most recent work is "Speak No Evil," a remake of the Danish film of the same name. He is indeed a fitting choice to interpret the "Clayface" story. The film is slated for release on September 11 next year.
