Netflix's new "The Chronicles of Narnia" film, currently in production, recently struck a global theatrical release deal with IMAX Corporation. The agreement plans for the first installment of the new series to be an unprecedented release across 1,000 IMAX theaters worldwide during next year's Thanksgiving holiday slot, with an exclusive run of at least two weeks. This marks Netflix's first large-scale global theatrical distribution. However, the deal is now facing significant backlash from multiple studios and cinema operators, with some film companies reportedly pressuring IMAX not to proceed with the release plan. Among the most vocal opponents is Disney.
According to a recent report from Puck News, Disney's anger stems from its own plans to release a major blockbuster during the same Thanksgiving window next year, close to "The Chronicles of Narnia"'s scheduled November 26, 2026, release. Disney is reportedly concerned that "Narnia" will monopolize too many IMAX screens, potentially impacting their own film's box office performance.

Similarly, Lionsgate has "The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping," the second prequel in "The Hunger Games" series, slated for release on November 20, 2026. They too are reportedly worried that "The Chronicles of Narnia" will significantly reduce the availability of IMAX screens.
The frustration isn't limited to studios; major cinema chains like Regal Cinemas and Cinemark Theatres are equally incensed. They are reportedly preparing to prohibit "The Chronicles of Narnia" from being shown in their IMAX auditoriums. IMAX Corporation, however, claims to possess a "nuclear option" that will persuade these studios and exhibitors to comply, though they have not elaborated on the specifics of this plan.
The first installment of the new "The Chronicles of Narnia" film series is being written and directed by Greta Gerwig, known for her work on "Barbie." She is expected to helm two films in the series.
