The live-action film adaptation of the beloved American children's show "Barney & Friends" has been in development for several years, with new progress largely under wraps for some time. Today, however, multiple international outlets simultaneously reported that Ayo Edebiri, who has recently risen to prominence for her role in the hit series "The Bear," has joined the project as a writer and is currently in negotiations to also star.

Beyond her acting career, Edebiri is an accomplished writer, having contributed to numerous television series. Her writing credits include an episode of the TV series "What We Do in the Shadows" and serving as a core writer for the second season of "Dickinson," starring Hailee Steinfeld. Her extensive writing experience is notable.

The live-action "Barney & Friends" film is a co-production between Mattel Films, the film and television production division of toy company Mattel, A24, and 59%, the production company founded by Oscar-winning actor Daniel Kaluuya. A director for the project has not yet been announced. The film's development was first revealed in 2019, meaning it has been in progress for nearly six years. While plot details remain under wraps, Mattel Films Vice President Kevin McKeon described the movie two years ago as an adult-oriented, surrealist work, akin to the styles of Charlie Kaufman or Spike Jonze.
