Peter Jackson’s "The Lord of the Rings" cinematic universe was set to expand with its second spinoff film, "The Hunt for Gollum," originally slated for a 2026 release. However, Andy Serkis, who portrays Gollum, recently announced a significant delay at the Vancouver Fan Expo, pushing the film back a full year. Serkis stated, "It was originally going to be December 2026, but it’s now December 2027."
Serkis elaborated on the current production timeline, explaining, "We’re in the very early stages of the writing process. We’ll be prepping later on this year, and prep takes a good chunk of time, six or seven months, and then we’ll be shooting next year. So that’s why it’s set for December 2027."

"The Hunt for Gollum" sees Serkis not only starring as the titular character but also taking on directing and producing duties. The writing team includes "The Lord of the Rings" series co-writer Philippa Boyens, her daughter Phoebe Gittins, Gittins’ writing partner Arty Papageorgiou, and Fran Walsh, who co-wrote the main six films. Walsh, Boyens, and Jackson will also serve as producers alongside Serkis.
The film's narrative unfolds between Bilbo Baggins' birthday party in "The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring" and the Fellowship’s arrival at the Mines of Moria. The story begins with Gandalf dispatching Aragorn to track down Gollum, driven by the wizard's fear that Gollum might reveal the whereabouts of the One Ring to Sauron.
