The global box office hit "Crazy Rich Asians," which grossed over $200 million, was announced for a sequel shortly after its release. However, six years have passed with no further updates on the follow-up film. Now, Warner Bros. Pictures has additionally announced that a spin-off series is also in development, with Adele Lim, co-writer of the original film, confirmed to return as showrunner. She will also executive produce alongside Jon M. Chu, who directed the first movie.

While details on which character's story the series will focus on remain unclear, rumors circulated in 2022 that Warner Bros. was developing a spin-off centered on the romance between Astrid (Gemma Chan) and Charlie (Harry Shum Jr.). It is possible these two projects are one and the same. Meanwhile, the official "Crazy Rich Asians" sequel film is still in development, set to adapt "China Rich Girlfriend," the second book in Kevin Kwan's original trilogy. However, director Jon M. Chu's busy schedule, with multiple projects currently underway, means fans may have to wait some time before he can return to helm the sequel.
