"Scream 7" delivered a shocking announcement today, confirming the return of a franchise veteran: David Arquette, who portrayed Deputy Dewey Riley in the first five films. The character was famously killed off in the fifth installment by the Ghostface killer played by Mikey Madison, leaving fans to speculate how his return will be handled, as the studio has yet to offer an official explanation.

Recent rumors have suggested that the plot of the seventh film will involve AI and Deepfake technology. This could indicate that Dewey isn't actually being resurrected, but rather that his likeness is being used by someone else.

Arquette's Dewey isn't the only deceased character reportedly making a comeback. Scott Foley, who played Sidney's half-brother Roman Bridger in "Scream 3," is also rumored to return. He joins Matthew Lillard (Stu Macher from the original "Scream") and Skeet Ulrich (Billy Loomis, also from the first film), who have been previously reported to be reprising their roles. Notably, all three were revealed to be Ghostface killers in their respective films.

The cast for the seventh installment also includes newcomers Anna Camp, Mckenna Grace, Celeste O’Connor, Joel McHale as Sidney's husband, and Isabel May as her daughter. They join returning cast members Mason Gooding and Jasmin Savoy Brown from the previous two entries, Neve Campbell back for her sixth appearance as Sidney Prescott, and franchise mainstay Courteney Cox, who has appeared in every film. The movie is slated for a North American release on February 27, 2026.

"Scream 7" will be directed by the franchise's original creator, Kevin Williamson. Guy Busick, who co-wrote the previous two films, returns to pen the screenplay, with his former writing partner James Vanderbilt receiving a story credit.
