British film magazine Empire recently unveiled its latest cover story, focusing on Marvel Studios’ upcoming theatrical release, "Thunderbolts." The issue also features excerpts from interviews with key personnel involved in the film’s production.

Director Jake Schreier, for instance, told Empire that "Reservoir Dogs," "Ronin," and "Mission: Impossible — Ghost Protocol" served as inspirations for the movie, along with "Toy Story 3."

Schreier specifically elaborated on how "Toy Story 3" influenced the project, explaining that "Thunderbolts" focuses less on the genre itself and more on the interpersonal dynamics of its characters. He noted that the team shares a similar sense of interaction, and like the characters in "Toy Story 3," they face a perilous situation akin to being incinerated. Schreier pointed out that the "furnace scene" in "Toy Story 3" was so successful because audiences deeply cared about the characters, leading them to wonder if they could escape together.

Schreier also touched upon one of the film's central themes, stating that it explores a group of characters who have committed many wrongs and may be grappling with guilt. He added that the narrative delves into elements related to mental health and loneliness, suggesting that some of the darkness we experience in life cannot be eradicated but can only be alleviated by seeking help from others.

When Schreier initially took the helm, the directive he received from Marvel executives was to "make something different." Florence Pugh, who portrays Yelena, the second Black Widow, described "Thunderbolts" as ultimately becoming "a really cool, indie-feeling, A24-esque assassin movie starring Marvel superheroes."

Having directed the first season of A24’s acclaimed series "Beef," Schreier acknowledged that the film indeed carries some of that show's tone. He stated, "There's definitely a bit of 'Beef' in there; it feels different. We've injected a resonant emotional darkness into this film, but not at the expense of comedy." "Thunderbolts" is slated for a North American release on May 2.
