McTeer will be the third actress to portray Professor McGonagall on screen. The role was previously played by the late Oscar winner Maggie Smith, who starred in all eight original "Harry Potter" films, and by Irish actress Fiona Glascott, who depicted a younger version of the character in the second and third installments of the "Fantastic Beasts" series.

The "Harry Potter" series is helmed by Francesca Gardiner, co-writer of "His Dark Materials," who serves as showrunner. Mark Mylod, director of "The Menu," is involved in directing the series; McTeer was also part of "The Menu" cast. The show will adapt one book per season, totaling seven seasons, with the first season slated to premiere next year.
