Scarlett Johansson Shuts Down Black Widow Return: "She's Dead, Okay?!" — Actress Reveals Studio Pressure to Join Instagram

While an increasing number of Hollywood stars are active on social media, Scarlett Johansson remains one of the few who has yet to create a public account. This is particularly notable for an artist with a brand to promote. Johansson has previously admitted that public exposure on social media is a tremendous pressure for her. In a recent interview with "InStyle" magazine, she revealed that even now, film studios continue to try and persuade her to join platforms to help promote her movies.

Johansson, whose new film "Jurassic World: Rebirth" is set to hit theaters on July 2, 2025, confessed to "InStyle," "Even today, I got an email from Universal Pictures, and they're like, 'Hey, would you consider joining Instagram in tandem with the release of 'Jurassic World: Rebirth'?' I get a lot of pressure to join social media. Is there a way I could do this and stay true to who I am? I don't feel like I could, actually (laughs)."

It's not just Universal; even her business partner, Kate Foster, with whom she co-founded the skincare brand The Outset, has actively tried to convince her to create an account, but to no avail.

When asked how close Foster came to persuading her, Johansson laughed, "Close enough that I had to talk to my therapist about it. I was like, 'I guess this is something I need to do.' But it goes against my core values. I think it was more about: How do I express that, too? Because there's so much expectation."

Inevitably, Johansson was also pressed about a potential return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Late last year, rumors circulated that Johansson would reprise her role in "Avengers: Doomsday" and "Avengers: Secret Wars." However, she directly denied it, stating, "Natasha is dead. She is dead. She's dead. Okay? We're going to have to let it go. She saved the world. Let her have her hero moment."

However, the original leaker of the news never specified that Johansson would return as Natasha Romanoff from the main timeline. The rumor simply indicated that Johansson herself would be involved. Given Johansson's emphasis that the main universe's Natasha is "dead," it remains possible that she could return to play a different character or a variant from another timeline, similar to how Robert Downey Jr. is rumored to return as Doctor Doom in the upcoming "Avengers" films.
