Four years after the first film, the video game sequel "Mortal Kombat 2" has officially unveiled its first-look images via Entertainment Weekly. The new photos give fans their first glimpse at key newcomers, including Karl Urban as Johnny Cage, Adeline Rudolph as Kitana, and Martyn Ford as the imposing Shao Kahn.

Director Simon McQuoid, who returns for the sequel, spoke with Entertainment Weekly about his vision for the characters. Regarding Johnny Cage, McQuoid explained that while the character will have hilarious moments, the goal was to avoid making him a purely comedic or cartoonish figure. He noted that leaning too heavily into the "cheesy" aspects would make the character feel weightless, and casting Karl Urban was key to bringing more depth and substance to the role.

Franchise co-creator Ed Boon also teased that Josh Lawson and Max Huang will return for the sequel, despite their characters, Kano and Kung Lao, being killed in the first film. Boon hinted that in the world of Mortal Kombat, there are plenty of ways for characters to come back from the dead. He also confirmed that Hiroyuki Sanada's Scorpion will return and remain a crucial part of the story.

"Mortal Kombat 2" will pick up with the legendary tournament itself, where Earthrealm faces annihilation at the hands of Shao Kahn if they lose. Returning champions from the first film include Lewis Tan as Cole Young, Jessica McNamee as Sonya Blade, Mehcad Brooks as Jax, Tadanobu Asano as Raiden, and Ludi Lin as Liu Kang. They'll be joined by other new faces, including Tati Gabrielle as Jade, Desmond Chiam as King Jerrod, and Ana Thu Nguyen as Queen Sindel. The film is slated for an October 24 release.
