Last month, after Daniel Craig was rumored to have signed on for the DC WWII superhero film "Sgt. Rock" only to abruptly exit, DC Studios denied that any official talks had ever taken place. Today, Deadline reports that Colin Farrell, who plays the villainous Penguin in Robert Pattinson's "The Batman" universe, is now in negotiations for the titular role.

While both The Penguin and Sgt. Rock are DC characters, they exist in separate continuities. Pattinson's "The Batman" is an Elseworlds story, whereas "Sgt. Rock" is set within the main DC Universe, thus avoiding any casting overlap. However, despite Farrell's interest in the part, his biggest obstacle is a packed fall schedule. He would need to coordinate filming for the second season of the Apple TV+ series "Sugar" and director Edward Berger's ("Conclave") new psychological thriller, "The Ballad of a Small Player," to make room for "Sgt. Rock."

"Sgt. Rock" will be directed by Luca Guadagnino ("Call Me by Your Name") from a script by Justin Kuritzkes. This marks the third collaboration between the director and writer, following Guadagnino's recent films "Challengers" and "Queer," both penned by Kuritzkes. Production is expected to begin this summer in the UK, with a release date yet to be announced.
