CD Projekt Red Teams With Scopely for New Mobile Game; "The Witcher" or "Cyberpunk" IPs Eyed

CD Projekt Red, the acclaimed developer behind "The Witcher" series and "Cyberpunk 2077," recently announced a strategic partnership with mobile game powerhouse Scopely. Scopely, known for popular titles like "MARVEL Strike Force," "Stumble Guys," and "Star Trek Fleet Command," will collaborate with CDPR to create a new game based on one of CDPR's established intellectual properties.

While an official announcement has yet to specify which IP the new game will draw from, industry speculation heavily points to either "The Witcher" or "Cyberpunk" as the most probable candidates.

CDPR has previously explored mobile adaptations of "The Witcher," including the 2015 MOBA title "The Witcher Battle Arena" and the 2021 ARPG "The Witcher: Monster Slayer."

Notably, "The Witcher: Monster Slayer" adopted a gameplay style reminiscent of "Pokémon GO," allowing players to hunt monsters in the real world using augmented reality. However, the game faced operational challenges and its servers were ultimately shut down in June 2023. In contrast, "Gwent: The Witcher Card Game" has maintained a more stable presence, suggesting that a new card-based game could potentially attract existing fans.

Should the new title delve into the "Cyberpunk" universe, it could open doors for more innovative gameplay experiences. Players might assume roles such as hackers, mercenaries, or ordinary citizens, engaging in simulated cyber intrusions via their mobile devices or even participating in technological warfare with other players. This type of game design would fully capitalize on the unique cyberpunk allure of the "Cyberpunk" IP.

Scopely has demonstrated robust performance in the mobile gaming market in recent years, boasting successful titles like "MONOPOLY GO!" and "Scrabble® GO." The company also recently acquired "Pokémon GO" developer Niantic for $3.5 billion. Despite Scopely's proven track record, some players remain cautious about this collaboration, expressing concerns that CDPR's new game might adopt a heavy monetization model, potentially impacting the overall gameplay experience.

As of now, CDPR and Scopely have not disclosed further details regarding the game's genre, release timeline, or business model, with more information expected to be announced in the future.
