Eight years ago, Blumhouse Productions' "Happy Death Day" proved a massive success, earning $125 million worldwide on a budget of less than $5 million. This strong performance quickly led Blumhouse to release a sequel, "Happy Death Day 2U," two years later. However, with an increased budget of $9 million, the sequel's box office dropped to just over $64 million, causing Blumhouse to hesitate on a third installment, despite earlier plans, leaving the sequel in limbo until now.

Now, however, Blumhouse appears to have found a path forward for the franchise. Franchise writer-director Christopher Landon and star Jessica Rothe recently confirmed that a third film is officially moving forward during a double feature screening event for the first two movies. Rothe stated that "progress has been made on the third film," with Landon echoing her sentiments. Beyond that, they offered no further details.
Landon previously mentioned that Blumhouse and distributor Universal Pictures had considered developing the third installment as a three-episode limited series for the Peacock streaming platform, but those plans ultimately did not materialize. The third film is now set to return to the big screen as a theatrical feature.
