The seventh installment of "Scream" has faced a tumultuous production, seeing much of its core team from the previous two films depart. First, directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett exited the project. Then, co-lead Melissa Barrera was fired due to controversial political statements. Subsequently, Jenna Ortega, who played Barrera's sister in the franchise, also decided to drop out, leading the studio to turn to original star Neve Campbell and a veteran screenwriter to return and stabilize the project.

When Ortega's departure was first announced, media reports suggested it was due to scheduling conflicts and increased salary demands following her breakout success. However, Ortega recently clarified the real reason in an interview with "The Cut" magazine while promoting her new film, "Death Of A Unicorn", stating that scheduling was not a factor.
She explained, "It had nothing to do with salary or schedule. The Melissa situation happened, and then everything just kind of fell apart. If 'Scream 7' wasn't going to be made with the original directors and the people I had fallen in love with, it just didn't feel like the right choice for my career at that time." Ortega implied that without her former collaborators continuing the fight, she lost the motivation to participate.
