The highly anticipated first trailer for "Tron: Ares," the third installment in the "Tron" and "Tron: Legacy" series, ">dropped last Saturday, igniting excitement among long-awaiting fans. This week, Empire magazine followed up with an interview with director Joachim Rønning, who offered insights into Jared Leto's new protagonist, Ares.

Ares is a program that crosses from the virtual Grid into the real world, initially with malevolent intentions. Rønning explained, "I don't want to be too on the nose, but I always think of him as Pinocchio. He's the Pinocchio who wants to become a real boy. We talked a lot about him almost being like a baby exploring the world for the first time, and how we want the audience to see the world through his eyes, to see all the small things we take for granted or don't notice anymore. That's important. And then the bigger theme of the movie is — what does it mean to be human? Especially in this context, because he's a computer program."

One of "Tron's" most iconic designs is the identity disc carried by every program and user in the Grid. While typically round, "Tron: Ares" introduces a new triangular version used by Ares. Rønning clarified, "That's definitely a weapon, and it's definitely an upgraded disc. Don't worry, purist 'Tron' fans, the standard round discs will still appear. When you join a franchise, you always want to improve the design, but I'm also sure some people will be upset just seeing a shape that isn't round. We will show the round ones, rest assured."

The "Ares" cast also features a strong ensemble including Gillian Anderson, Greta Lee, Jodie Turner-Smith, Evan Peters, Hasan Minhaj, and Cameron Monaghan, alongside the return of franchise veteran Jeff Bridges.
"Ares" was penned by Jesse Wigutow, known for "It Runs in the Family," and Jack Thorne, who wrote the "Enola Holmes" series. For the score, with Daft Punk having disbanded four years ago, Nine Inch Nails has taken over the musical reins. The film is slated for an October 10 release in North America.
