This past February, Legendary Pictures and Hasbro Entertainment jointly announced plans to launch a live-action cinematic universe based on the popular card game IP "Magic: The Gathering," with multiple film and television adaptations in the works. Today, however, Deadline exclusively reports that Legendary and Hasbro have seemingly found their director for the first film in the franchise: Matt Johnson, who recently garnered critical acclaim for his work on the BlackBerry origin story "BlackBerry" (pictured below), is reportedly in line to helm the project.

Deadline also emphasized, citing their sources, that while Legendary and Hasbro have yet to extend a formal offer to Johnson, he is indeed their top choice. Johnson, an accomplished actor and screenwriter, notably wrote, directed, and starred in "BlackBerry." Should he finalize a deal with Legendary and Hasbro, he might also take on a role in the "Magic: The Gathering" film.
This isn't Hasbro's only "Magic: The Gathering" screen adaptation in recent years. Since 2019, Hasbro has been collaborating with Netflix on an animated series based on the game, though it remains unfinished and its potential inclusion in this new cinematic universe is uncertain.
