HBO's "The Last of Us" Season 2 Reviews Are Here: Stellar Performances, But Only Half the Story

The second season of "The Last of Us," adapted from the acclaimed video game, was set to premiere on HBO on April 13. With the media embargo now lifted, initial reviews largely echo the success of its debut season, once again solidifying its status as one of the "best video game adaptations." However, a recurring point of contention among critics is that this season only tells half of the story.

According to Variety, the second season delves into darker themes, making an already intense viewing experience even heavier. This thematic shift, however, allows Bella Ramsey's portrayal of Ellie to undergo a profound evolution, transforming her from a sharp-tongued teenager into a deeply traumatized young adult.

A similar sentiment was echoed in a review from The Wrap, which noted that, much like the game, the second season is tightly structured and compelling, with its most impactful aspect being the recurring cycle of violence.

While The Hollywood Reporter praised the overall production, it suggested that the season's ending felt anticlimactic, explaining that many questions raised this season would only be answered in the next. This structural choice, despite its faithfulness to the game's narrative, has reportedly sparked concerns among some viewers regarding pacing and overall satisfaction.

IGN also commented that while the second season remained excellent, its biggest challenge as a sequel was telling only half the story. TV Line observed that the show was still meticulously produced but also more brutal and somber than before. In contrast, Empire awarded a perfect five-star rating, hailing the season as "simultaneously moving and heartbreaking, a peak in post-apocalyptic television," and expressed anticipation for a perfect conclusion in the third season.

Total Film, however, offered a more reserved take, stating that while the second season captured the ineffable grief of the original and impressed with powerful performances and violent scenes, its abrupt ending failed to recapture the magic of the first season.
