The live-action adaptation "A Minecraft Movie," directed by Jared Hess, has become a viral sensation since its release, not just for its better-than-expected box office performance but also for sparking a series of "chaotic viewing" incidents in theaters. The most notable trend involves audiences erupting during the appearance of the "Chicken Jockey," with moviegoers collectively screaming, standing up, and even throwing entire tubs of popcorn into the air or at each other, turning screenings into massive parties.
The craze spread rapidly across social media, with countless videos documenting the festival-like atmosphere inside theaters. However, not everyone was thrilled with the antics. Some theaters reportedly ejected disruptive audience members and even called the police. In one of the most extreme cases, a moviegoer allegedly brought a live chicken to a screening.
Despite the controversy, director Hess seems to be enjoying the chaos, openly expressing his excitement. In an interview with The New York Times, he said he laughs uncontrollably every time he sees a new audience reaction video, explaining that creating memories for people in theaters is the very reason they make movies.
Regarding the debate over whether throwing popcorn crosses a line, Hess took a lighthearted approach. He noted that nobody gets hurt by popcorn and added that even when he takes his own kids to the movies, the floor ends up covered in it by the end, regardless of whether they throw it.
Still, some have voiced concern for theater cleaning crews, arguing that these "viewing parties" significantly increase the workload for cinema staff.
In fact, even the film's star, Jack Black, who plays Steve, got in on the action. He visited a theater and, pretending to be a pre-recorded announcement, humorously urged the audience: "During today's screening of 'A Minecraft Movie,' please do not throw popcorn, do not bring Lapis Lazuli, and absolutely no playing Chicken Jockey!"
After the announcement finished, Black made a surprise appearance in person, wielding a "Minecraft" pickaxe and wearing a yellow hard hat. "I'm Steve! Ladies and gentlemen, I brought my pickaxe!" he shouted. "Please enjoy 'A Minecraft Movie'! Let's start the show!" The crowd erupted in screams, sending the energy in the theater to its absolute peak.
