A spinoff of the 2022 DC film "The Batman," the HBO original series "The Penguin" has quickly become one of the year's most anticipated shows, driven by the intense power struggle between Colin Farrell's Oswald Cobblepot and Cristin Milioti's Sofia Falcone.

However, as Milioti also promotes her return for the seventh season of Netflix's "Black Mirror," she has begun to publicly voice her observations and concerns about the shift in modern fan culture. In an interview with MovieWeb, she expressed her confusion and disappointment with the attitude of certain toxic fans today, calling out the communities for major IPs like DC, Marvel, and "Star Wars." She stated they have transformed from safe spaces that once embraced differences and welcomed the marginalized into a "cruel culture."
"The core of these works was originally for those who felt like outsiders, for people who found strength in being different. But now, some fans have become insistent that 'you have to be just like me,' and they don't accept different voices at all. It's something I really don't understand, and it makes me very sad," she said.
Milioti confessed that her own motivation to become a fan stemmed from a sense of loneliness and a desire for connection while growing up: "These stories gave me an outlet where I could cry, laugh, and think about the world from another perspective. They're like the Greek myths of our generation."

"There are certain people in power, like Donald Trump or Elon Musk, who wear a lack of empathy as a badge of honor. I really don't understand how people got to this point," Milioti continued. "The world is so cruel and terrifying now, it's almost like we're living in a fictional story where the villains are in charge."
Her comments sparked a heated discussion on Reddit, with many users strongly agreeing. One user commented, "She hit the nail on the head. I've seen way too much of that 'this thing is for me and me only' mentality." Another added, "She's right. Some people's obsession with these properties has made me not want to like anything anymore."
