The annual Star Wars Celebration kicked off this morning, with Lucasfilm beginning to unveil new project details. Among the first to be promoted on stage was the new spin-off film directed by "Deadpool & Wolverine" helmer Shawn Levy and starring Ryan Gosling.
During the event, the studio officially announced the film's title as "Star Wars: Starfighter," slated for release on May 28, 2027. This date notably marks the 50th anniversary of "Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope." Additionally, the animated title reveal video was simultaneously uploaded across all official Star Wars social media channels.
Gosling and Levy were also present to promote the film. Gosling, in particular, shared a childhood photo sent by his mother, depicting his "Star Wars" bedsheets, aiming to prove his lifelong fandom for the franchise.
Additionally, renowned film journalist Daniel Richtman earlier revealed on his Patreon page that "Starfighter" will reportedly center on Gosling's Jedi character attempting to train his 15-year-old nephew. During their mission, they are pursued by a male and female villain. The nephew's mother is also said to be a significant character in the film, as is another unidentified female role.

"Starfighter" is penned by Jonathan Tropper, who previously collaborated with Levy on "This Is Where I Leave You" and "The Adam Project." The story is set several years after the events of "Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker" and is expected to begin filming this fall. Earlier rumors suggested the project would be a smaller-scale "Star Wars" film with a significantly lower budget than typical franchise entries.
