Ben Affleck Opens Up About "Zack Snyder's Justice League," Laments the "Horrendous" Batsuit: "I Didn't Feel Like a Hero"

Ben Affleck, who famously portrayed Batman in multiple DC Extended Universe (DCEU) films, recently sat down with GQ to discuss "Zack Snyder's Justice League." During the interview, Affleck explained why the "Snyder Cut" garnered such overwhelming support and affection from fans.

The 2017 theatrical release of "Justice League" faced significant backlash from many fans. Director Zack Snyder had to step away from the production due to a family tragedy, and Joss Whedon, known for "The Avengers," took over. The resulting film, however, largely failed to meet the expectations of the fanbase.

Following years of fervent fan campaigns, Warner Bros. ultimately agreed to release Snyder's distinct, four-hour director's cut on HBO Max. This version was widely embraced and supported by a vast audience.

When GQ asked Affleck why the "Snyder Cut" was so special, he responded:

"The Snyder Cut, so to speak, is actually the movie that Zack wanted to make from the beginning. You have a director with a very clear idea of the kind of story they understand and want to tell and they know. And then you've got a commercial expectation, like a very valuable IP property. And sometimes they'll hire this person for their distinctive take and view, and then want to impose on that something different. And the tension between those two things, I think, was very difficult and caused the first movie to feel very much like neither fish nor fowl. Which happens."

Affleck continued, "You know, a lot of long slow-motion sequences, stuff in black and white, very much R-rated. That movie is very much what Zack's vision was. And it's a rare thing that somebody gets the chance to go back and revisit and try to do what they wanted to do."

Ben Affleck: The Batsuit Was "Horrendous to Wear"

While Ben Affleck remains a beloved Batman actor for many, he also revealed to GQ his profound dislike for wearing the iconic Batsuit during the "Justice League" production, expressing his aversion without reservation. He stated:

"I hated the Batsuits. The Batsuits are horrendous to wear. They're incredibly hot, for one thing. They don't breathe. They're made to look the way they want 'em to look, and there's no thought put into the human being. So what happens is that you just start sweating. Now, I'm already—I sweat, you know what I mean? I get hot. And so in that thing, you would just be pouring water because it's got the cowl over it. Like, there's one thing to wear the suit, but once you cover your head, I guess that's where all your heat kind of escapes and you feel it."

Affleck further explained that even highly trained stunt performers struggled with the costume. "Even the most highly trained, much more fit stunt guys, the parkour guys, the action guys, they could do that for about like 45-50 minutes and then they were like gonna get heat stroke," he said.

"It just made it difficult to make the movie because it was so hot," Affleck added. "And it also does not make you feel very heroic because you're instantly exhausted and really sweaty and kinda trying to hide like, the sweat pouring down your face. Like, 'No, we can go again. I'm fine. I'm good.' Maybe Christian Bale or Robert Pattinson could adapt better, but I think that was the unhappiest part."

Despite the discomfort, Affleck still expressed his enjoyment of the filming experience for "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice." He also conveyed his satisfaction that Snyder was able to fully realize his creative vision. His unwavering support for the director and the project once again underscored for fans why "Zack Snyder's Justice League" was so significant—not just for being different, but for its authentic representation of the creator's true artistic intent.
